Hazel E. Mikesch, age 90, passed away Thursday, April 30, 2009 at her home in Twin Lakes, Wisconsin. She was born on May 29, 1918, the daughter of the late Ernest and Hilda Paluoma Liljenfeldt and stepmother Helmi Liljenfeldt. Her beloved husband, Ferdinand Mikesch, preceded her in death. During her life Hazel enjoyed traveling, dancing, singing, and doll collecting.
Hazel was fluent in four languages, having resided in Finland, Germany, and Sweden for much of her life. Hazel’s stories of her travels during WWII kept family and friends mesmerized and were audio recorded for posterity.
She is survived by three children, David (Deborah) Mikesch of Twin Lakes, WI, Rolf (Ronna) Kraemer of Edinboro, PA, and Jamie (Scott) Grosse of Russell, KY., as well as six grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her brother George Liljenfeldt and sisters Thelma Roberts and Ethel Liljenfeldt.
Interment will be private at North Shore Gardens cemetery. Friends and family are encouraged to attend an open-house celebration of Hazel’s life at the family home on Saturday, May 9, 2009, from 1PM-5PM. The home is located at 321 W. Main St., Twin Lakes, WI. Flowers may be sent to the family's home for the memorial celebration and will then be donated to local hospice patients. The family would like to especially thank the wonderful nurses and aides with VNA Hospice and Societies Assets. The Haase-Derrick-Lockwood Funeral Homes and Crematory is assisting the family.
